10 THINGS EVERY AMERICAN MUST KNOW ABOUT UKRAINE

And cutting through all the noise to know the truth.

  • SUFFERING: The exact numbers are a bit hard to ascertain, but we know this: Ukraine is suffering. Approximately one million dead – military and civilian – and millions have fled their homes either within the nation (from the east) or to other counties. During the war, the population of Ukraine has dropped from 46 million (before Russia took Crimea in 2014) to approximately 31 million. “In the 21st century, Ukraine has experienced more death and destruction from war that all the nations of North America, South America, East Asia, Australasia, and Western Europe combined.” (Portrait of Ukraine, A Nation at War, Sergei Ivashenko and Gregory W. Slayton, 2024, page 118.)
  • GENOCIDE: This is not fundamentally about two personalities: Putin and Zelenskyy. Put all of the discussions and distractions about these two men aside, at least for now, for the sake of all the Ukrainians who are facing almost assured death and massive loss of freedoms. IMPORTANT: This is about the genocide of Ukrainians.
  • IMBALANCE: The imbalance is staggering: This is David (Ukraine) vs Goliath (Russia). In land mass, Russian is 28 times larger than Ukraine. Russia has unlimited resources. May Ukraine be preserved like the biblical David. However, they will need U.S.A. help. Now.
  • SOVIET EMPIRE: This is not about the real or alleged corruption in either Russia or Ukraine. (Ukraine has made strides against corruption in recent times.) Maintain proper focus: This is about Putin’s overt determination to reestablish the old Soviet Empire across Eastern Europe and beyond. Know this: Ukraine identifies with the West. It does NOT want to be Russian.
  • UKRAINIAN SACRIFICE: Ukrainians are not asking for America to be on the front lines or for even one drop of American blood to be shed on their soil. They are willing to pay in their own blood the ultimate price – and one million already have – for their national and personal freedoms.
  • VIOLATED VOWS: In 1994, the U.S.A., U.K., and Russia entered into an agreement with Ukraine, the Budapest Memorandum, saying that if Ukraine would give up her nuclear weapons, the other three countries would protect her from any aggressors. The Ukrainians believed the other three nations, a former President said that the Ukrainian view was: “Let’s do whatever America asks us.”. In fact, Ukraine removed and decommissioned its nuclear arsenal. The other three nations, including the U.S.A., violated their vows. (In August of 2025, a small delegation of faith leaders met with former President Victor Yushchenko, who had a good relationship with President George W. Bush, and repented on behalf of the U.S.A. for this egregious sin.)
  • AMERICAN ASSISTANCE ESSENTIAL: Ukrainians are appropriately asking for America’s help in protecting the approximately 30+ million civilian Ukrainians that remain in the country, primarily in 15 large cities. They, for good reason, plead for help with military defense systems. From people on the street to faith leaders (pastors, bishops) to political leaders (members of Parliament, former president) to military leaders (top level), they are crying out in one voice, “If America does not help us, we will be exterminated.” Tragically, they are correct. Proper accountability structures can be put in place for America’s contribution. And Americans might be pleased to know that a prominent and influential think tank, known as the Snake Island Institute (named after the famous Snake Island in the Black Sea), led by a small group of brilliant and articulate Ukrainian young adults, are looking for ways for Ukraine to bless back the U.S.A.
  • CHILDREN: What is almost never discussed in American media is the atrocities done by Russian forces to children. Russia is kidnapping Ukrainian children for three reasons:
    • to brainwash them, telling them that all Ukrainians are Nazis,
    • to sexually exploit them,
    • to conscript them into the Russian army as soon as they turn 18.
    • A Yale University study is able to confirm 35,000 children have been taken hostage. However, Russia claims they have 700,000 Ukrainian children. At least 35,000 (maybe many more) Ukrainian children are being held hostage in Russia. To use the analogy from the Children of Israel fleeing Egypt’s Pharaoh, we say to Russia, “Let my people (the Ukrainian children) go.”
  • COST: It will cost the U.S.A. “pennies on the dollar” to help Ukraine NOW, compared with what it will cost the U.S.A. (and the world) in loss of life, destruction of property and decimation of culture if we wait for Putin to march across Ukraine (which he will if America does not help more), and Poland, and then Eastern Europe, and perhaps beyond.
  • CALL TO ACTION: To quote one member of Ukrainian Parliament, “There is no more time for discussions. The time is up.” America, we must act now. Pray. Fast. Contact your member of Congress by calling (202) 224-3121. Now. Please.
